National Insurance Number

A NIN (national insurance number) is the equivalent of the American social security number and one must be obtained when you start working in the U.K. Just as the American SS#, your NIN remains with you for life.

To get a NI number you will have to visit the local Department of Social Security (DSS) office in the area where you are staying. To find out the location of your local DSS office call their national enquiry line on: 020 7712 2171 (9.00am-5.00pm Monday-Friday.)

You may need to make an appointment, although setting aside a day to go and queue may speed up the process. Your work permit and passport will have to be produced and an NI card will be posted to you within two weeks.
