The first step to heath care is to first register with a GP (General Practicioner) in your area. Phone up and let them know you are a new patient whom has not been registered through the NHS previously. Once an appointment is made, you will fill out the required paperwork at the GP's surgery (office) and they will send the form off to the NHS (National Health Service). You will then receive a National Health Service Number (on a paper card in the post) which follows you around much like a HMO number does in the U.S. Visits to your GP are free with the only payment requirement being for prescriptions (currently approx. £6 per prescription).
